Will I have the option to select which OS it will boot up with? Understanding the premise that “only as long as the USB External HD is connected to the laptop”, For what my end goal is, what disk type and which styles of partitions would be the best to create and use?Ħ. Or simply partition the drive in 3 with the allocated space I desire?ĥ. Or partition, and then format each volume individually? I format the entire drive, and then partition it? Do I first create a New Simple Volume? If so, then what? Do I remove, and then re-install to initialize the disk?Ĥ. If in reality there is more space than what the HD is presenting now, how would I go about reclaiming that lost space?ģ. Why is it only showing 305244 Mb in volume capacity, when I purchased it as it having 320 gigs?Ģ. Although fixable by reformatting, some of the operations are irreversible, making the process time consuming and nerve wrecking.ġ.
Keep in mind that because my knowledge on this is limited, I do need very detailed instructions. One is more likely to err and/or omit a step, when under pressure. Nevertheless I am trying to allot time and prepare for any eventuality. It is just too close for my personal comfort level.

Now that Win 7 RC downloads end (until 8/20), install to activation is a small window (only 30 days) and the RC expiration is 6/1 of 2010. I only have 3 days to complete what needs done. That is, aside from right clicking to get to expand, shrink, and format, etc. I am not entirely sure on the how to, the process and/or steps to accomplish this.
I understand that at this point I create the partitions, before I create my backup and run my installation of Win 7RC, and so forth. (+/-125 GB)Ĭ) Last, just some extra storage space for whatever.

I would like to create 3 partitions on that drive:Ī) For a complete pc backup or mirror copy of the other HD in my Vaio laptop running Vista Business SP1.(+/-150 GB)ī) To do a clean install of Windows 7 RC for product evaluation. It has 1 Simple (layout), Basic (type), NTFS (file system) partition displaying a volume capacity of 305244 MB, showing unallocated space of 298.09 GB in the details of the Graphical view of the MMC Snapin. I purchased a 'My Passport Essential 320 GB usb external hard drive' from Western Digital. With little of it being in Computer and Disk Management. It is mostly all in hardware and software. First I must admit that although I have pretty good knowledge about computers and PC Repair.
